An Forecasting Platform Participant Made $436,000 on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.
A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Industry Context
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to political events.
The industry were examined under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
